Mould is everywhere and while we can’t prevent it from entering our premises we can remove it if a growth has occurred and take steps to prevent it from occurring again.
Mould proliferates if you have a moisture problem and poor ventilation and can often be detected visually or as a musty smell. Mould can lead to serious health issues and the correct measures should be taken to remove it and then prevent its reoccurrence.
We recommend two methods of cleaning up a mould problem depending on the type of material it is growing on. There is also the possibility that the material it is growing on is unable to be treated and will need to be completely removed and replaced if the mould growth is too bad. If you are unsure, it’s best to consult a professional mould removalist.
Mould that is able to be removed by treatment, which ever method you are required to use, will need a number of items prior to starting. These should include:
-
protective clothing comprising of enclosed footwear and socks, thick rubber gloves, a face mask to prevent the inhalation of vapours as well as contact from products with the eyes and protective clothing ( a full protective suit covering the whole body is ideal)
-
cleaning brushes, drop tarps and rags, as well as drying cloths
-
good supply of clean water
Cleaning products which may be required consist of distilled vinegar, tea tree oil and sodium hypochlorite solution in a concentrated strength. Unfortunately shelf/supermarket products are not usually of a high enough strength to be effective at removing the mould problem.
Before you begin cleaning there are a few simple steps that should be followed:
-
Get all your products ready including plenty of clean water for accidental spills or exposure to skin or eyes.
-
Put on your safety gear and get your equipment ready.
-
Place your drop sheets down to protect items in the area that are not being treated.
Spray or apply your cleaning solution on the affected area as well as on your cleaning brush. Scrub the surface as well as any cracks and crevices. Remove any excess product and wipe dry when finished. Clean up the area including removing and disposing of equipment and tarps. Ensure the area is well ventilated to help it dry out.
If mould reoccurs or has not been removed sufficiently, consult a professional for further advice.
As far as mould is concerned, prevention is better than cure, so it is imperative to investigate and understand why you had a problem in the first place. Only then can you address the issue and stop it from coming back.
