Over the past few decades, there has been some serious fear around mould and the adverse effects mould exposure can have on the human body.
It’s appears true mould can cause nose, throat, eye and skin irritations, plus asthma and other respiratory conditions in people who are sensitive to mould.
Mould causes allergies in one in five people – however, this is often as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, there have been outlandish claims linking mould with pulmonary haemorrhages in babies, memory loss and lethargy, causing fear and concern throughout the community.
These claims have not been proven.
The experts say there is not enough evidence to prove mould causes dangerous, life-threatening diseases – nor that it causes death and/or haemorrhages in babies! We are not scientific experts, therefore we can only rely on others.
The commercialisation of mould testing and mould sampling kits has stirred up the general public, making people think mould testing is necessary to maintain a happy, healthy home. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth – in fact, mould testing has recently been discredited by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Findings from the EPA
According to the EPA, “if visible mould growth is present, sampling is unnecessary.”
There are no federal limits for mould or mould spores in Australia or America – which means sampling and testing cannot be used to check a building’s compliance with any existing standards or regulations.
Occasionally, surface sampling can be helpful to determine if an area has been cleaned properly, but that’s about as far as it goes.
Regardless of whether mould testing is reliable or not, mould sampling and testing should be conducted by trained professionals who have experience with sampling protocols and know how to interpret the results.
However, it’s important to remember that even trained professionals can’t guarantee reliable, accurate results. Mould testing is still in the research phase – it’s unregulated and unapproved by any existing health organisations, let alone the federal government.
Hundreds of commercial businesses throughout Australia offer mould testing services. Be warned – you could be paying for unapproved laboratory testing which is not recognised or scientifically tested.
